Brent Leber named ASUN Conference Winner for LifePublished by
ATLANTA, Ga. - The ASUN Conference recognized its 2019-20 Fall Winners for Life team. The team is comprised of one student-athlete from each of the nine institutions and honors those who display excellence on and off the playing surface. Brent Leber, the ASUN Runner and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, participated at the NCAA Championships after placing seventh with a 10K time of 30:26.4 at the NCAA South Regional to earn an at-large individual selection. His 2019 season featured two top-10 finishes and an individual victory in the ASUN Championship to lead Lipscomb to the conference title. His seventh-place finish at the NCAA Regional was the highest-ever ranking for a Bison in a region race. A senior Exercise Science major, Leber, a member of Lipscomb's Fellowship of Christian Athletes and SAAC, volunteers his time at FiftyForward Senior Day Care. Amanda Carroll is a graduate student majoring in Educational Leadership. She is a four-time President's List and Dean's List recipient and serves as one of FGCU's representatives to the ASUN SAAC and serves as the league's Division I Representative to NCAA SAAC while accumulating over 80 hours of community service for programs such as Habitat for Humanity, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Project Life Movement and the Naples Humane Society. On the volleyball court, Carroll collected 1,483 career kills (9th in ASUN history) and 1,247 digs (26th in ASUN history) while leading the Eagles to the 2018 ASUN Championship title. The outside hitter wrapped up her illustrious career as a three-time All-ASUN selection and the 2017 ASUN Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A senior Kinesiology major at Jacksonville, Alex Turnock has a 3.93 grade-point average (GPA). He is a two-time President's List and Dean's List selection and is a member of numerous Honor Societies including Phi Kappa Pi and the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success. At the UCF Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 27, Turnock posted his top 8K time of 26:22.0 and had his top 10K time of 34:56.6 at the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships, his final collegiate meet. Turnock is a three-time All-Academic Team recipient and is the Founder/Director of the JAX Track Club and is a volunteer coach at Jacksonville's Bolles High School. Katie Meyer was Kennesaw State's top finisher in four races this season. She recorded the top 4K time in program history (14:16.0) at the Bulldog Invitational before placing 15th at the ASUN Women's Cross Country Championship in November with a time of 18:03.43. A native of Roswell, Ga., Meyer volunteered her time at the Atlanta Track Club's Wingfoot XC Meet and at the KSU Veteran's Day Football Game. The junior is an ASUN All-Academic Team selection with a perfect 4.00 GPA majoring in Environmental Engineering. Calli Parlier, a sophomore from Apex, N.C., placed second in the 2019 ASUN Women's Cross Country Championships crossing the finish line in 17:10.72 and helping Liberty to a second-place team finish. She was named First Team All-Conference for the second time in her career after placing fifth and earning the Freshman of the Year honor a year ago. An ASUN Academic Honor Roll recipient, Parlier is majoring in Therapeutic, Allied and Health Professions at Liberty and has volunteered her time at numerous different events including Spooktacular, The Virginia 10 Miler, Flames Club Thankathon and Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat during her two years in Lynchburg. The 2019 ASUN Men's Soccer Player of the Year, Rene White led NJIT to its first NCAA Tournament appearance after claiming the ASUN Championship title last fall. The junior scored 17 goals in 2019 which ranked fourth nationally and is the Highlanders career leader in goals (34) and points (74). A four-time Offensive Player of the Week selection in 2019, White was named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American Second Team and All-East Region First Team at the conclusion of the season. A Business major, White volunteers his time with Be The Change NJ and the Montclair Emergency Services to the Homeless among other organizations. An ASUN Second Team honoree, Kara Nix placed second on her North Alabama squad at the ASUN Women's Cross Country Championships with a time of 17:52.01 good for 13th overall. She and her teammates helped the Lions take fifth place with 122 points. Nix, an active member of UNA's SAAC, serves at President of the American Chemical Society (Student Chapter) and Secretary of the UNA Industrial Hygiene Association. The junior also participates in the Lion Buddies Mentor Program and BCM Christmas Adopt-A-Child. Majoring in Industrial Hygiene and Chemistry, Nix was named to the All-Academic Team last fall.
Anderson Bobo helped guide North Florida to a third-place finish at the ASUN Men's Cross Country Championships with an 8K time of 25:33.53 to finish in 20th place. His time at the ASUN Championships was a new personal-best in the 8K and he followed that up with a PR of 32:36.0 in the 10K at the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships. Off the course, Bobo is a senior Communications major and was inducted into the National Communication Association Honor Society (Lambda Pi Eta) and also serves as a running camp counselor and mentor.
A double major in Political Science and International Studies, Arye Beck just completed his junior Cross Country season at Stetson. He serves as the Hatters' SAAC President and Chair of the ASUN SAAC and was selected to represent the conference at the NCAA Leadership Forum last year. A leader in a majority of Stetson's community service projects, Beck has been on the Dean's List every semester and is a two-time ASUN Honor Roll selection. In 2019, Beck had two Top-15 performances in six races while posting the sixth-fastest 10K time (33:05.8) in program history at the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships.
The Winners for Life team honors a campus citizen that is respected as one who shares and/or demonstrates the ASUN Core Values: Education, Honesty, Student-Athlete Experience, Fairness, Health, Ambition, Respect, Diversity, Inclusion, Leadership, Responsibility, and Sportsmanship. To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have competed in the current academic year in an ASUN sponsored sport and be in good academic standing at his/her university.
